Towing and Hauling with a UTV
Tips for Towing and Hauling with a UTV

UTVs are built to work hard—but towing and hauling safely requires the right setup and smart technique. Follow these guidelines to protect yourself, your equipment, and your machine:
- Know Your Limits:
Check your UTV’s tow rating, tongue weight capacity, and cargo bed limits. Never exceed the manufacturer’s specifications—overloading puts strain on the engine, suspension, and brakes. - Distribute Weight Properly:
Keep heavy items low and centered. For trailers, place about 10–15% of the load’s weight on the hitch to maintain stability. - Secure Everything:
Whether you’re hauling tools, gear, or game, use tie-downs or ratchet straps to prevent shifting. Even small items can become hazards on rough trails. - Use the Right Hitch and Accessories:
Make sure your hitch matches your load requirements. For heavier towing, consider a reinforced hitch receiver and upgraded suspension components. - Brake Earlier and Slower:
Extra weight increases stopping distance. Maintain a slower speed and begin braking sooner than you normally would. - Take Corners Carefully:
Towing changes your turning radius and increases the risk of rollover. Use wide, slow, deliberate turns to keep both the UTV and trailer stable. - Favor Low Gear:
When towing up or down hills or navigating rough terrain, use a lower gear for better control and reduced strain on your machine. - Check Your Load Often:
On long rides or bumpy trails, stop to inspect your straps, tires, and hitch connections. A quick check can prevent major issues.
